The term 'Theology' literally means the study of God, deriving from the Greek word theos, meaning 'God', and the suffix -ology from the Greek word logos meaning "the character of one who speaks or treats of [a certain subject]", or simply "the study of a certain subject". It now means the science of God or of religion, typically as it is practised in a systematic and reasoned or philosophical manner. Saint Augustine defined theology as 'reasoning or discussion concerning the Deity'.

Theologians use various forms of analysis and argument (philosophical, ethnographic, historical, spiritual and others) to help understand, explain, test, critique, defend or promote any of myriad religious topics, discussing such issues by applying reason and perception to dogma (divine or ecclesistical authority). It might be undertaken to help the theologian:

  • understand more truly his or her own religious tradition,
  • understand more truly another religious tradition,
  • make comparisons between religious traditions,
  • defend or justify a religious tradition,
  • facilitate reform of a particular tradition,
  • assist in the propagation of a religious tradition, or
  • draw on the resources of a tradition to address some present situation or need,

among other things.

Can someone help me please? What is the difference between covenant theology and dispensational theology?
Q. What IS covenant theology to begin with? And why is it different from dispensational?
Asked by this I - Sun Apr 19 08:42:43 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Covenant theology is based on the theory that God has only one covenant with men (the covenant of grace) and only one people, represented by the Old and New Testament saints one people, one church and one plan for all. These beliefs require the adherents of covenant theology to interpret prophecy in a nonliteral way. Dispensationalism, on the other hand, is a system of theology with two primary distinctives: (1) a consistently literal interpretation of Scripture, especially Bible prophecy, and (2) a distinction between Israel and the Church in God's program.

What are the available jobs in Theology?
Q. I'm currently undertaking a masters in Christian Theology and am wondering what the job market and my job prospects are like in the field of theology, either in the UK or the US. I currently hold a LLB Law degree (Hons) and would not mind combining the two areas if possible. Any advise in the right direction will be greatly appreciated. Remain Blessed.

A. You are unlimited. You can go into counseling, government, or just about anything you can think about. There are several positions in Churches and faith based organizations. I used to work for the American Bible Society. Just know that the money is not great and the hours are long.
