The term 'Theology' literally means the study of God, deriving from the Greek word theos, meaning 'God', and the suffix -ology from the Greek word logos meaning "the character of one who speaks or treats of [a certain subject]", or simply "the study of a certain subject". It now means the science of God or of religion, typically as it is practised in a systematic and reasoned or philosophical manner. Saint Augustine defined theology as 'reasoning or discussion concerning the Deity'.

Theologians use various forms of analysis and argument (philosophical, ethnographic, historical, spiritual and others) to help understand, explain, test, critique, defend or promote any of myriad religious topics, discussing such issues by applying reason and perception to dogma (divine or ecclesistical authority). It might be undertaken to help the theologian:

  • understand more truly his or her own religious tradition,
  • understand more truly another religious tradition,
  • make comparisons between religious traditions,
  • defend or justify a religious tradition,
  • facilitate reform of a particular tradition,
  • assist in the propagation of a religious tradition, or
  • draw on the resources of a tradition to address some present situation or need,

among other things.

Do you see Liberation Theology as problematic towards our Capitalist system?
Q. Liberation theology is a school of theology within Christianity, particularly in the Roman Catholic Church. It emphasizes the Christian mission to bring justice to the poor and oppressed, particularly through political activism. Its theologians consider sin the root source of poverty, recognizing sin as exploitive capitalism and class war by the rich against the poor As an atheist and capitalist, this is doubly worrisome to me. Here you have Theft (Socialism) justified in people's minds by 'God'. Scary!

A. "Theft" is a concept derived from the idea of "ownership". If no one owns anything, then no one can steal anything. But we need to consider how "ownership" itself came to exist. Somewhen in the past, somebody picked something up or pointed at something and said "mine!" There was no justification for it, just the claim, and a willingness to fight others for possession. And anything could be owned, including other people, such as slaves, wives and children. Where did the feudal lords get their titles and lands? By fighting and stealing from other people. The people who had already taken over properties and territory got to be "kings" and "nobles", but they had no "God-given" right to any of it, just force and conspiracy with other… [cont.]

Is there any evidence from responses by Christians that any of them have a love-driven theology?
Q. Especially when asked what drives the theology of those who believe in hell as a place of torment?

A. honestly, most christians do not seem to have any love to give to anyone. Most of the loving christians I have met were more closely related to hippies and that movement then actually christians.

A. Sport Studies?!?! Really? What use is it? What do you want to do, because your options don't really seem aimed at a single job? I'm not sure if these will help you get your job.
