Could the abomination of desolation be the new testament?
Q. The new testament takes Jewish scripture as a sure foundation for a new religion, mistranlates it, reorganizes it, then calls it the old covenant and dead. Could the nt be the thing that usurps the place that is not his? Could the nt be the abomination?

A. I tend to agree with scholars who consider it to refer to the erection of a statue of Zeus in the Temple by Antiochus IV Ephiphanes (mid 100s BCE). But then I also tend to see the Christian canon as resuming Antiochus' campaign. In other words, it might not have been what was intended by the author of the Book of Daniel, but its function is remarkably similar, an insertion of foreign idolatry into Judaism for political ends.
