Had Jesus or another lead up a revolt against the Romans, how about inviting Persians as allies?
Q. Only the Persian army was capable of standing against the Romans and in fact did for centuries. Or would the Jews have considered rule by Persians worse? From the time Jesus taught to the end of the Temple was 40 years or so. A revolt by Jews alone would have been crushed as it was in 79 CE. But, hypothetically Rome's biggest foe is not even mentioned in the NT as a friend against the occupation.

A. During Jesus's time, the Persians didn't exist. The Persian Empire was spread into two phases. The first were the Achaemenid Persians, which lasted from 550 B.C to 330 B.C. It was conquered by Alexander the Great. The second phase was the Sassanid Persians, which started in 226 A.D and lasted until 651 A.D. During the interlude, the Middle East was controlled by the Seleucids, who were Greeks, and the Parthians who were technically Persian, but did not acknowledge any ties to the past realm. In any event, neither the Parthians nor the Sassanids would have been inclined to assist any revolt within Rome. Mostly because while they did stand up to Rome, they weren't particularly good at it. The advantage that they had was that they were a… [cont.]

What is the earliest account that you know of, where the Romans used the flagrum?
Q. Hello, and thank you for wanting to answer my question. I am doing alittle research on the Bible, and wanted to know if Jesus was whipped with a flagrum or just some old-fashioned leather whip. Although, I would prefer you answer me this question. What is one of the earliest accounts of the Romans using the flagrum that you know of. I don't need to know the most earliest, just tell me what you know. Just as long as it is anywhere before 31-33 A.D. I would prefer that what you tell me, you can back up either with your credentials (i.e. Professor in Roman History, Highschool World History Teacher, exc), or with a book, magazine, internet. Please, if you would try to give me the name of that site, book, magazine, or whatever . Thank you my… [cont.]

A. The Roman flagrum, or scourge, actually predates the Roman empire. The scourge can be found in images of the Egyptian God Osiris dating as far back as 2400 BC. Scourging was a normal punishment before crucifixion. Two documents, The "lex Porcia" and the "lex Sempronia" dating from 195 and 123 BCE forbade the flogging of Roman citizens, and the punishment was normally reserved for slaves, non-Roman citizens or those commiting what were considered heinous crimes. The Roman lyrical poet Quintus Horatius Flaccus (65-8BCE) makes mention of the horribile flagellum (horrible whip) in his works and calls for its use to be discontinued. It is most probable that the use of flogging as punishment long predated the Roman Empire, just… [cont.]
