These works correspond to the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh), with some variations and additions. In the Eastern Orthodox Church the comparable texts are known as the Septuagint, from the original Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures. In the Syriac Orthodox church, they are known as the Peshitta. The term "Old Testament" itself is credited to Melito of Sardis. Tertullian also used the Latin Vetus Testāmentum. The Old Testament in the Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Greek Orthodox Bibles have 39 books in common. Some scholars believe much of the Old Testament was written in Mesopotamia. It is believed the Old Testament was composed and compiled between the 12th and the 2nd century BC. Jesus and his disciples referenced it when discussing Jesus's teachings, referring to it as "the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms ... the scriptures". (Luke 24:44–45) The accounts of Jesus and his disciples are recorded in the New Testament. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How did Christians obtain the Old Testament if it was an original Hebrew book which belonged to Jews? Q. Did they go into Israel and steal the Hebrew scrolls or something? How did European Christians who weren't Jewish get the Old Testament? Before anyone says Jesus was a Jew. If Jesus was a Jew then why don't modern Jews agree with Christians? Asked by 1/2 human - Sun Jan 11 15:42:09 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Very simply put, Christianity is like a religion "continuing" Judaism in the sense that the first Christians (like Jesus and his apostels who didn't call themselves that) were all Jews that believed the prophecy had been fulfilled and the Messiah had walked the earth. There were other Jews, on the other hand, who did not believe Jesus is the messiah since it conflicts with what the original scripture says. So there you can kind of say Judaism split - some Jews stayed as they were and remained Jewish to this day, and some Jews went ahead and wrote an addition to the bible (the New Testament), started calling themselves Christians and went on to spread their word and try and convert the rest of the world to their new religion as well (which… [cont.] Answered by reut c - Mon Jan 12 02:33:21 2009 What are your thoughts on the God of the Old Testament and the God of now? Q. I have been a believer of an ultimate Creator for my entire life, but naturally some questions of curiosity do arise, like: Why was the God of the Old Testament so much more directly active in the lives of his servants and the people of the world versus modern times? Why doesn't God audibly speak to His servants in 2009, and cause the Sun to stand still, give individuals power to do great things like the old days, among other things? Just curious. Q. 5-7 page Research Essay. I am already doing an essay on the 10 Plagues, so this one must not be about the Ten Plagues. Preferably something that would interest me (hence the Ten Plagues being interesting to a 19yr old male) or be easily researched with a colleges library/internet? *** MUST be from The Old Testament!!! Thank you all! Asked by Night Hawk - Tue Mar 31 11:56:40 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. The first five books of the Bible (Torah) are almost obsessively consumed with "the Law." I don't know if you find that interesting, but you could certainly fill up 5-7 pages just discussing law, the need for law, kinds of punishment, etc. It's actually a pretty interesting topic. The Tanach is the primary religious text of Judaism and is referred to by Christians as the "Old Testament" in the Bible. Note: There are many different translations of the Bible, and most have some small differences within their texts. From Wikiquote under the GNU Free Documentation License.
