Q is the seventeenth letter of the basic modern Latin alphabet. Its name in English (pronounced /kjuː/) is spelled cue.

History

Egyptian hieroglyph wj Phoenician Q Etruscan Q Greek Qoppa

The Semitic sound value of Qôp (perhaps originally qaw, "cord of wool", and possibly based on an Egyptian hieroglyph) was /q/ (voiceless uvular plosive), a sound common to Semitic languages, but not found in English or most Indo-European ones. In Greek, this sign as Qoppa Ϙ probably came to represent several labialized velar plosives, among them /kʷ/ and /kʷʰ/. As a result of later sound shifts, these sounds in Greek changed to /p/ and /pʰ/ respectively. Therefore, Qoppa was transformed into two letters: Qoppa, which stood for a number only, and Phi Φ which stood for the aspirated sound /pʰ/ that came to be pronounced /f/ in Modern Greek.

In the earliest Latin inscriptions, the letters C, K and Q were all used to represent the sounds /k/ and /g/ (which were not differentiated in writing). Of these, Q was used to represent /k/ or /g/ before a rounded vowel (e.g. "EQO" = ego), K before /a/, and C elsewhere. Later, the use of C (and its variant G) replaced most usages of K and Q: Q survived only to represent /k/ when immediately followed by a /w/ sound.

The Etruscans used Q only in conjunction with V to represent /kʷ/

Where can I buy build-in BB-Q grill and coal tray that is made to measure?
Q. Hi, we recently moved into a house that has all the brick work for a buid-in BB-Q already build- without the grill and tray for the coals. Argos, B&Q and Homebase sell the bits I need, unfortunately they are all the same size and about 3cm to big on all sides to fit into our shell. Any idea where I could find alternative size or a place that does made to measure? Thanks!

A. as for the grill you could cut that down to size , for the tray you could make one yourself , you could check out your nearest sheet metal workshop and enquire there , they would happily make one for you ,

Where can I buy thinner or pointed q tips in bulk?
Q. I want more precise q tips for makeup. sorry, i should've been more specific. i need them to erase wayward eyeliner or nailpolish, but the regular ones are too thick and the cotton often comes off and gets stuck in nail polish.

A. Q tips are no good for make up especially eyes which is what i pressume you want these for buy quality brushes and wash regularly with baby shampoo a good brush is worth its weight in gold, and they come in very fine sizes, i use them, a q tip is not the way to go for a proffesional look aaah, now i am with you, have you tried snipping the top off a regular one, diagonally with sharp scissors? thats what i do, never had any problems with them fuzzing-if you know what i mean, but i do use a lot of them, i use Johnsons baby ones for my ears, buti use cheap ones from the pound shop for make up, they are usually quite hard, not suitable for your ears but cheap ones are great for make up
