The term 'Theology' literally means the study of God, deriving from the Greek word theos, meaning 'God', and the suffix -ology from the Greek word logos meaning "the character of one who speaks or treats of [a certain subject]", or simply "the study of a certain subject". It now means the science of God or of religion, typically as it is practised in a systematic and reasoned or philosophical manner. Saint Augustine defined theology as 'reasoning or discussion concerning the Deity'.

Theologians use various forms of analysis and argument (philosophical, ethnographic, historical, spiritual and others) to help understand, explain, test, critique, defend or promote any of myriad religious topics, discussing such issues by applying reason and perception to dogma (divine or ecclesistical authority). It might be undertaken to help the theologian:

  • understand more truly his or her own religious tradition,
  • understand more truly another religious tradition,
  • make comparisons between religious traditions,
  • defend or justify a religious tradition,
  • facilitate reform of a particular tradition,
  • assist in the propagation of a religious tradition, or
  • draw on the resources of a tradition to address some present situation or need,

among other things.

How many hours a week will a Theology degree be?
Q. at a UK university? I'm going to Kings College in London and I'm contemplating doing Theology. Does anyone know roughly how many hours a week it will be as I can't find the answer on their website? I will need to have a part time job while I'm there because I'm not being funded by my parents so if it's excessive then I may have to rethink a change in course for now, as much as I'm passionate about Theology.

A. Depends if you're counting the hours on Sunday or not.

Is theology, Sports Studies, Media Studies and Psychology a good list to take for A level?
Q. im in year 10 but our school is making us choose our options early. I am very interested in Sport it is my favourite subject, and psycholocy sounds interesting. Theology is a bit different to wat i like and media studies is my last one because i dont like anything else they offer!! do you think this would be a good list to have a my options?

A. Sport Studies?!?! Really? What use is it? What do you want to do, because your options don't really seem aimed at a single job? I'm not sure if these will help you get your job.

What impact did liberation theology have on Central America?
Q. I understand this turned the oppressed against the oppressors, however, did this spark violence or a rebellion from the people?

A. I fear that you are not going to get any meaningful replies on this venue. therefore, I would suggest that you stop by a local religious bookstore and look at books on teh subject. I have studied Liberation Theology for 30 years and don't know of any uprisings or violence caused by it.
