A tulip is a flower in the genus Tulipa, comprising about 150 bulbous species, and in the family Liliaceae. The native range of the species includes southern Europe, north Africa, and Asia from Anatolia and Iran in the west to northeast of China. The centre of diversity of the genus is in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan. A number of species and many hybrid cultivars are grown in gardens, used as pot plants or as fresh cut flowers. Most cultivars of tulip are derived from Tulipa gesneriana.

If I cut off a tulip bud before it opens with it then open in water?
Q. last year i lost a whole row of tulip buds to the squirls or maybe it was a rabbit? The buds all came up and were about 2 days from opening and then they were all chopped off at the head. Some thing must really like the sweet flowers.

A. They should open for you if they are fully developed and colored. I put little circular cages around my tulips to protect them from rabbits, but if the deer come by, I am out of luck.

How to care for tulip bulbs until I can re-plant them?
Q. My university plants new tulip bulbs each fall and then digs them up and throws them away each spring after they're done blooming. I "rescued" a few bags full of tulip bulbs (with the plants still attached). I know bulbs should usually be planted in the fall, but since they've just been dug up, should I replant them now? If not, how should I store them until fall?

A. You do not need to wait until fall to plant them, you can plant them now. They have to be planted in the fall in order for them to bloom the following spring because they need the time in the ground to establish their roots. They can be planted in spring as long as you remember to water them during the summer because they're roots will not be established yet - but not too much or they will rot. IF you put them in the refrigerator keep them away from your produce - some produce gives off gases that will make your bulbs "ripen" which translates into "rot" for flower bulbs. On a side note - generally bulbs need to store energy in order to bloom the following year. They do this through their foliage after their blooms are gone, this is… [cont.]

Can I plant tulip bulbs in spring?
Q. My son-in-law just came back from a business trip in Holland and brought me back some tulip bulbs. I notice that they have already started sprouting. As everything is covered in snow here and the ground will probably be frozen untill March/April, I cannot put them in the ground yet. I usually plant my bulbs in the fall, but in this case, since they are already sprouting, can I plant them in the spring or do I risk losing them if I plant them too early? Do they need to be stored in the dark until I plant them? I really need advice on this as I am a beginning gardener and hate wasting anything.

A. I think the fact that they have started sprouting means they have begun channeling their energy to grow. I would plant them now, but I wouldn't put them too far into the soil since they have started producing "green." If they bloom (and you may have a some that don't break soil) then let them be until the fall. Then dig them deeper into the soil or remove them after they have died back. If you remove them, store them in a dark dry place. Then six to seven weeks before you intend to plant, put them in the freezer. Then remove them and put them in the soil. This frost to warmeth should give them a cycle to begin their growth pattern. I might add - if the sprouts are white, you could probably get away with storing them in the… [cont.]
