M is the thirteenth letter of the basic modern Latin alphabet. Its name in English (pronounced /ɛm/) is spelled em.

History

The letter M derives its shape from the Phoenician Mem, via the Greek Mu (Μ, μ). Semitic Mem probably originally pictured water. It is known that Semitic people working in Egypt c. 2000 BC borrowed a hieroglyph for "water" that was first used for an alveolar nasal (/n/, because of the Egyptian word for water, "n-t". This same symbol became used for M in Semitic, because their word for water began with that sound.

The letter M represents the bilabial nasal consonant sound, IPA: [m], in Classical languages as well as the modern languages. The Oxford English Dictionary (first edition) says that 'm' is sometimes a vowel in words like spasm and in the suffix -ism. In modern terminology, this would be described as a syllabic consonant — IPA [m̩].

I'm going to college in a few months and planning on getting a job what kind of bank account should I open?
Q. I'm planning on getting a part time job somewhere near my college campus. What kind of bank account should I get? A checking account? A charge account? What's the difference? Any primer/advice for someone who's knew to personal finance accounts is greatly appreciated. Thank you guys!

A. Ask for a student checking account. Almost all banks offer a free checking account specifically designed for students. Write this down. Make sure the account has no minimum balance requirements and no monthly maintenance charges. Many banks will offer a free checking account, but require you to use online bill pay or set-up direct deposit, so make certain the account is truly free, no stipulations attached. As a Branch Manager, most students run into trouble with overdrawing their accounts, which result in large amounts of overdraft charges. So, until you gain more experience balancing a checkbook, ask the new accounts representative about overdraft protection. Best of luck!

I'm having a big spaghetti dinner for 35 people. What is the best way to keep the pasta hot?
Q. Also, how much pasta do I cook for that many people? After the noodles are cooked, do I leave them in the water? Do I rinse them? I understand I'm not to put oil or butter on them. Professional help please!

A. I boiled salted water and put the uncooked noodles in it without any further cooking with the hopes of having them ready when the family came home when everyone was running late. The noodles disintegrated in the pot, so I wouldn't do that. I would get my sauce cooked well ahead of time and keep it simmering, but keep a big pot of water hot, nearly boiling, and keep adding water to it, so that about 10 minutes ahead of serving the pasta I could cook the noodles and add them to the hot spaghetti sauce. A lot of good cookbooks have a "cooking in quantities" or "cooking for a crowd" sections. Have a great party. Get one of those great big platter/bowls that are kind of flat and serve the pasta in that and if you have a really big platter… [cont.]

I'm interested in helping people in other countries. How can I contribute?
Q. I want to help people that are less fortunate in life but I don't want to do the whole donations thing. I don't want to help in a materialistic way by giving them money. I want to do more than that. I wanted to do something like travel to a different country and help people out of a sort. I'm only 20 years old so I don't about the whole having to be a doctor to take care of people. Any ideas?
